Montferri: The Sanctuary of Jujol

Be sure not to miss: the old town centre, where houses such as Cal Vidal and Forn del Blai have Gothic arches; Rocamora Castle, today converted into a restaurant; the Montserrat Sanctuary, the work of the distinguished architect, Josep M. Jujol. Do you want to go for a walk? Go up to the Torre del Moro and see this watchtower from the 11th century on the edge of the territory. To regain your strength, try a good craft beer or toast with cava, all brewed in Montferri.

Montferri is a town with a great winemaking tradition; you only have to see the vineyards in the surrounding fields. In the old centre, near Sant Bartomeu parish church (BCIL), some houses retain their Gothic arches, such as Cal Vidal on Calle Mayor and Forn del Blai, a former bakery and now a winery, in Plaza Major. Rocamora Castle (BCIN) is a must-see. The building was built to defend the border area of the Gaià river from attacks by the Saracens. It is believed to be from 1010 and may even be of Arab origin.

The Montserrat Sanctuary (BCIN) is one of the most representative works in the Alt Camp region. Modernist in style, it was a commission of the Tarragona architect, Josep M. Jujol, a disciple and collaborator of Antonio Gaudí. The building has the shape of a boat oriented to Montserrat and is full of Jujolian details to be discovered following the outline and originality that characterised the architect Jujol.

Located at the top of the ridge of the Torre Grossa, south of the town and 376 metres of altitude, we find the Torre de Montferri or Torre del Moro (BCIN).
